Are You Going to Jump or What?

I have vivid memories of jumping double dutch when I was a kid. My friends would turn the rope and I would do that step one does when getting ready to jump in but I wouldn’t (jump that is). After a few seconds the people turning the rope would say are you going to jump or what? Well here I am at 60 and sadly I’m still hearing “are you going to jump or what?” It kind of the way I’ve lived my life. Now that I blog I follow lots of young people and admire the guts that they have. More than one telling the world that they gave up a “good” job or left an industry they were trained to work in to follow their passion. Guess what? they jumped and so far it seems to be working out okay. For sure they may not be rich yet but they’re happy. A lot can be said for being happy.

So I’m making a commitment at this late date to jump when I get the opportunity. No more hesitation, taking the time to talk myself out of something I really want to do. Care to join me anyone? Are you going to jump or what?

Is It Too Late To Try Something New?

This morning on one of the AM shows there was a story about a gentleman who retired at 61 from a variety of jobs including selling real estate. When he had been retired a short time he decided to try his hand as a comedian. Today at 67 he has a flourishing though not terribly lucrative career. He and his wife will not get rich off of this new career but it pays a few bills and has great perks. He now teaches classes on public speaking and comedy on cruise ships and though they don’t pay him, he and the wife cruise for free! Last year they spent 100 days at sea free of charge. He is getting to be well known in Florida and is generally enjoying himself. So who says it’s too late for a change?

American Business – Can We Support Them?

Periodically I come back to this issue. We have to stop blaming and/or relying on politicians. It’s up to us. If we promote and support American businesses maybe they will begin to rebound. Last night I watched a show my husband saved to the DVR entitled Detroit in  Overdrive. Great show highlighting the spirit and  adaptability of businesses in one of the hardest hit City’s in the downturn of American business. Shout out to Motor City Denim Company and BADASS Beer (Kid Rock inspired) by Michigan Brewing both Detroit companies. Tell me about companies in your town so that we can shout them out and promote them . Visit my other blog: knitteddreamscrocheteddesires.com and click on the blogs I follow and on line sources for some great indie artisans.

Let’s promote us.

Tell Me Your Story

I want to write about real stories of re-invention and renewal. If you have change your life dramatically or know someone who has please write me and let me know so that I can share their story. There is nothing better than teaching by example.

Re-Fit/Re-Tool/Re-Think

When companies that run heavy equipment change direction they are said to re-fit or re-tool their operations. This process means that they get rid of old obsolete equipment and replace it with new or more useful stuff.

Today’s thought is that we need to sit back periodically and do the same thing. If the ‘stinkin thinkin’ isn’t  working change it. This may not be easy but it’s probably necessary. It’s hard to move forward if we are only thinking about the past. What’s done is done. Leave it where it fell and pick up today. What have you got to lose except a bad attitude?

One Year Later, Still Here

A little over a year ago when I began this blog I was relieved to have  been hired by the U.S. Census Bureau. It was temporary but I had found myself without summer employment ( adjunct instructing) and it’s my nature to panic and not let spirit shake out the universe and reveal  the plan. So I was feeling pretty fortunate and found myself in an office of people many of whom were in the same predicament.  I was still thinking that I should be looking for the proverbial, conventional full-time job. Anyway the Census job lasted until the fall and fit nicely with the beginning of school and I was back to work. Three different schools, three different City’s, two States, four days. Still harboring the belief that I had to find “the job” I looked every Sunday at the jobs offered, looked at several websites and followed up on any leads that friends and family gave me. Well it’s summer again, the school work is back to one course and the ultimate job has not shown up. So what’s my point?

I don’t really want the “full-time job” I want to make a living on my terms. Dare I say it out loud. My Knitted Dreams blog was the beginning of my latest creative venture and truth be told using my creative talents is all I ever wanted to do. Much more to follow!
