It’s Never to Late to Look Our Best
My Mom was 96 today and she said that if today is her last day she’s had a good life and she can’t live forever. On the one hand she is one with her destiny and on the other, about an hour after this conversation she came our of her room with her hair done, make up on and wearing a lovely stylish outfit. She looks younger than her years and is still fairly vain. It made me laugh but it was also a reminder that it’s never to late to spruce up our appearance. Sometimes we don’t feel like it but it really does make you feel better. Look as if!
My Grandson calls his Dad Yo!
Hmm. Could it be because his Dad says “yo, what are you doing”, “yo, don’t do that” It goes on. Okay people I’ve said this before, words have power. If you are around little ones remember that they learn by emulating those around them that includes the things we say, yo.
Take Time for Friends
Yesterday I had lunch with two of my buddies. We live within miles of each other but go for months without actually seeing one another. I have been friends with the two of them for over thirty years. One is retiring to Florida with her husband soon. Although we knew she was planning to go it became a reality when she recently sold her house. Anyway there may not be many more of these get togethers. Not that I can’t see her in Florida but let’s face it, getting there won’t be the same as driving the eight or nine miles to her house. Even though it was just lunch, we stretched it into a couple of hours and of course we had fun. For the first time I am realizing that our group is splitting up. Retirement often means relocation and she is not the first nor will she be the last of my group of friends to move elsewhere. If I have my way, I’ll be on the move in a few years too.
Anyway today’s message is take time for lunch. Call your friends and set up a time. It may not always be as easy as it is now so don’t wait. You’d be surprised how much catching up you can do over a burger.
Thoughts of Spring Are In My Head
Okay it’s only February but talk of high gas prices have me thinking of less driving. One thing that we can cut is trips to the grocery store. During the spring and summer we have nice garden here in the City. I said to my husband we need to start planning our planting schedule because we need to get an early start this year. Nothing is more gratifying than having a salad and fresh veggies without the trip to the store. Spring is on my mind.
My Muse is Missing
I have struggled lately to find words to put in my blogs. This is unusual for me because generally I have a lot to say. I have placed personal pressure on myself to keep a schedule with my second blog and I am bowing under the self-imposed schedule. I think this week I am just going to go with the flow and see what happens. Perhaps that will allow me to write more in this one too. We’ll see.
I knew Whitney Houston
For several years I worked for Whitney Houston’s Dad. As a result I met her when she was a teen aged model, before she ever sang a note in public. She was beautiful, engaging and self assured. I attended her first few public shows and I must say that I have never personally heard a more beautiful voice. I don’t care how she died. I just want to appreciate the legacy of her music. I am sorry for the loss to her family and friends and know that they are “going through” as they say.
My Mom said all of the money and fame couldn’t buy her happiness. Think many of us know that already. Her death at such an early age is just a reminder to hold those we love close.
Find Something to Celebrate
I am not a football fan. There I’ve said it. The Super Bowl was on but I couldn’t tell you much about it. I enjoyed some of the commercials though. I did focus though on how excited people were about the game. In 2012 I figure that anything that gets our attention and isn’t negative can’t be all bad. So my suggestion is look for things to celebrate. Kid gets a good grade make cupcakes. Husband/Wife gets a new part/full time job – may not be your dream but it’s progress- make a special dinner. Anyones birthday, celebrate. Get the picture. Life it truly short and besides, I like a good party. How about you?
The Sky Is Falling People!!!
Okay so as far as I know the sky is not falling but we are experiencing unprecedented “bad” weather world-wide and I can’t get many people to pay attention. I mentioned this before and I’ll do it again. We are not ready for emergencies. Plain and simple. Do you have water stored up? Emergency food stuffs, a medical kit? Do you have a planned meeting place if you can’t get home? Do your kids know what to do in an emergency? You know what the old folks said about an ounce of prevention? In these times of economic uncertainty many of us say that we can’t afford some of the extras but I feel that we can’t afford not to get them. I am not preaching gloom and doom but we just don’t know what will happen. Ask the folks in Joplin and other communities hit in the last year. Buy a few extra dried goods, canned goods, simple first aid products when you can. Make a family plan and go on about your business.
Just saying.
Nothing Smells Better Than New York City Street Food
As I took my weekly walk on the streets of lower Manhattan I thought for the umpteenth time that there is one good smell after another as you walk. Now I am proud to say that I don’t partake of all these goodies but I enjoy smelling them and the good memories that the smells bring. When I was a kid in New York some of my best times were weekend excursions with my Dad while he made sales calls to beauty salons and barber shops. He would always stop and get himself a hot dog at one of the street vendors. He would tell me that he would get me something to eat but not one of the “street dogs” because he wasn’t sure how clean the vendors were. Father logic? I guess but those hot dogs smelled heavenly. I couldn’t wait until I could buy one myself. Heck I have a New York stomach, I can eat on the street with the best of them and live to tell about it. Millions of people can’t be wrong can they? Anyway the best thing is that it brings back memories of my Dad who was the center of my young universe.
The sense of smell can be a wonderful thing!
I Walked Fourteen Blocks in 16 Degree Weather
Sounds dramatic doesn’t it? Well it’s true and I did it today to get to Vogue Knitting Live at the New York Hilton. I cannot swear that I’d have taken that cold walk for many other reasons. It is amazing what we’ll do for something that we love. I was in heaven today yarn and people who love to use it. It doesn’t get any better than that. If you are not passionate about anything, keep looking. It is so worth it and a passionate pursuit may change your life.
Happy Sunday!
